II. Health Supervision

Anticipatory Guidance: Tips for Working with Families

The following suggestions are offered to encourage the formation of positive working relationships with families.

  • Remember that the family is the primary support system for the child or teen and the preferred point of intervention
  • Communicate in a manner that is simple, honest, and nonjudgmental
  • Support the family's feelings of adequacy as parents
  • Respect cultural values when providing guidance and health care services
  • Recognize and share the value of the child's individuality with the family
  • Avoid using labels and stereotypes
  • Help the family to cope with any problems that may be identified
  • Reassure the family about behaviors that are developmentally appropriate and normal
  • Refer families to behavioral health and support services as needed or appropriate
