Anticipatory
Guidance: Tips for Working with Families
The
following suggestions are offered to encourage the formation of
positive working relationships with families.
- Remember
that the family is the primary support system
for the child or teen and the preferred point of intervention
- Communicate
in a manner that is simple, honest, and nonjudgmental
- Support
the family's feelings of adequacy as parents
- Respect
cultural values when providing guidance and health care services
- Recognize
and share the value of the child's individuality with the family
- Avoid using
labels and stereotypes
- Help the
family to cope with any problems that may be identified
- Reassure
the family about behaviors that are developmentally appropriate
and normal
- Refer families
to behavioral health and support services as needed or appropriate
