Anticipatory Guidance: Specific Visits

Health education provides children, teens, and families with valuable information about the benefits of healthy habits and lifestyles, as well as ways to prevent illness and injuries.

Anticipatory guidance helps families to understand what to expect during their child's or teen's current and approaching stages of development.

The drop-down menus below offer suggested health and guidance topics for specific visits from infancy through adolescence. These topics may be used selectively in talking with the family and may be modified to better fit the need of specific populations.

You may also want to hand out age-appropriate information based on Bright Futures to begin a conversation with the family and to more fully involve them in their child's health (this information may be downloaded and printed free of charge).

0 - 11 Months:

Topics for this stage of development might include infant seat and crib safety, childproofing the home, sleep positioning, or the introduction of solid foods.

1 - 4 Years:

Topics for this stage of development might include toilet training, bedtime routines, water safety, tooth brushing and flossing, or family rules and limit setting.

5 - 10 Years:

Topics for this stage of development might include school readiness, physical activity, sexuality education, pedestrian safety, or healthy meals and snacks.

11 - 20 Years:

Topics for this stage of development might include safe driving, substance use and abuse, sexual activity, social interactions, or violence and suicide prevention.

This concludes the Health Education/Anticipatory Guidance module.

The next page contains Review Questions for the information presented in this module.

Move on to the next section, Specific Health Issues, after completing the review questions.
