II. Health Supervision

Physical Examination: Specific Visits

Physical Exam ImageThe physical examination can identify physical and developmental concerns as well as reassure families and teens about the range of norms within child development,

The pull-down menus below note developmentally specific issues to be considered as part of a comprehensive physical examination at each preventive health visit.

 
0 - 11 Months:

Physical exams during these visits might reveal issues regarding jaundice, neurologic problems, diaper rash, or excessive bruising or injuries that might indicate abuse.


1 - 4 Years:

Physical exams during these visits might reveal issues regarding developmental hip dysplasia, walking and gait, tooth eruption, or early childhood caries (baby bottle tooth decay).


5 - 10 Years:

Physical exams during these visits might reveal issues regarding body mass index (BMI), malocclusion, early puberty, or scoliosis.


11 - 20 Years:

Physical exams during these visits might reveal issues regarding sexual maturity ratings, sports injuries, acne, or evidence of eating disorders.
