Laboratory Tests: Introduction

Mother and Child ImageEach section in this module describes the specific laboratory tests that are part of comprehensive pediatric preventive health care. The timing (periodicity) for each test is based on recommendations for children who are growing and developing in a healthy way, with no manifestation of any important health problems.

For each lab test included in this module, the HealthCheck Periodicity Schedule indicates the recommended age(s) for that specific test. More frequent testing may be needed in certain circumstances (medical conditions, risk factors, family concerns, gaps in continuity or documentation of care).

Laboratory Tests:

Metabolic and Hemoglobinopathy
Sickle Cell

Lead
Anemia (hematocrit or hemoglobin test)
Urinalysis
Cholesterol
Tuberculosis
STDs and Pregnancy

Documenting Laboratory Tests

Thoroughly document all aspects of the laboratory tests using the Standard Medical Record Form (SMRF) (link opens in new window).

Specific Areas of Note in Filling Out the SMRF (from SMRF training):

TB Risk (12 months to 21 years): Assess risk, if ‘high’ then check “PPD Ordered.” NOTE: All children entering school must have a PPD test prior to entrance.

Cholesterol risk assessment (3 years to 21 years): Review risk factors. Must mark either “low” or “high." Note: AAP recommends lipid profile at ages 6, 8, 10 annually if at high risk.

Read more about Documentation Required for Compliance with HealthCheck (link opens in new window).

(Note: this image is taken from SMRF #5: 2 to 5 year old visits; forms for other age ranges may differ slightly).
