Curriculum Structure

bullet How is the Curriculum Structured?

The curriculum is designed for use in a variety of settings. Curriculum content is presented in a series of separate and distinct modules, each focusing on a specific topic. Each module is augmented with supplementary materials and resources. Users may concentrate on one particular subject, choose several related topics for a tailored training, or progress through the entire curriculum module-by-module.

The following is a description of the curriculum content and features:

The Core Modules

These six modules describe the core components of a pediatric preventive health care visit.

Number 1 Module 1 - Health History
Stressing the significance of the health and developmental history, this module details the content of a complete initial history, as well as interval and adolescent histories. Helpful information on conducting effective health interviews is included, along with sample interview questions for use in well-child health visits.
Number 2 Module 2 - Physical Examination
The components of a comprehensive unclothed physical examination are featured in this module. The recommended periodicity schedule, unique aspects of exams in each developmental period, and a discussion of physical growth assessment procedures are included.
Number 3 Module 3 - Screening and Assessment
Vision, hearing, and blood pressure screenings, as well as nutritional and developmental and behavioral assessments, are presented in this module. Recommended guidelines, timing, and age-appropriate methods for screening and assessment are summarized.
Number 4 Module 4 - Laboratory Tests
Screening laboratory tests—newborn, lead, iron-deficiency anemia, tuberculosis, cholesterol, and urinalysis—are the focus of this module. Risk factors, guidelines, periodicity, and age-appropriate screening methods are described.
Number 5 Module 5- Immunizations
This module on childhood and adolescent immunizations contains a link to the current ACIP approved immunization schedule, a discussion of adolescent immunization opportunities, and descriptions of the vaccine programs and requirements.
Number 6 Module 6 - Health Education and Anticipatory Guidance
The theme of this module is providing effective health education and anticipatory guidance, based on the age of the child and the needs of the family. Suggestions for forming trusting partnerships with families, children, and teens are offered, together with examples of developmentally appropriate topics for use in each well-child visit.

Complementary Modules

These four complementary modules explore topics of special interest to pediatric providers:

Number 7 Module 7 - Documentation
Emphasizing the critical significance of careful documentation, this module includes a discussion of the medical record and tips for accurately documenting a pediatric health visit. Specific documentation requirements for each component of the health visit are provided.
Number 8 Module 8 - Cultural Competence
To assist health professionals in providing culturally sensitive health care, this module offers information about addressing health disparities and building culturally effective heath partnerships. Also included are practical tools and tips for providers who serve increasingly diverse populations.
Number 9 Module 9 - Oral Health
Recognizing the need for skilled oral and dental health assessments, this module includes a discussion of oral health inspection as part of the physical exam. Screening and referral guidelines are provided, and age-appropriate oral health interview questions and anticipatory guidance topics are suggested.
Number 10 Module 10 - Developmental and Behavioral Health

Pre- and Post-Tests

A series of test questions appear at the beginning and end of each module, providing users with the opportunity for self-assessment. These tests consist of multiple choice and true/false questions, and are intended to evaluate users’ progress and changes in their knowledge, understanding, comprehension, and retention of the material presented. For users who register to receive CME or CEU credits, the post-tests will be instrumental in awarding credits, upon completion of the course with a score of 70% or higher.
