Young children should have enough space for both inside and outside play. Both the inside and outside play areas need to have a variety of portable play equipment.

The outside area should also have a secure perimeter (like a fence or a wall), some shade, trees or bushes, and grass. It needs to have different kinds of surfaces (like dirt or bark) for children to walk, run, and play on, and it needs to have enough space. The Public Playground Safety Handbook has detailed guidelines for designing playgrounds and choosing equipment and surfacing materials to make sure that children are safe.4
