One Step At a Time: Helping Young Children Be Active!

Play Outside

Teeter TotterTime young children spend outside is important to make sure they are physically active enough.3

Young children should play outside for 60 to 90 minutes every day if they are in full-time child care. If they are in part-time child care, they should play outside for about 20 to 40 minutes for every 3 hours they are in child care.2

Times to be physically active outside can be shorter when the weather is bad (for example, if it’s very hot, very cold, raining, or snowing). When young children play outside for a shorter time, the time to be physically active should be longer so the total amount of time spent being physically active stays the same.2
