Structured Physical Activity

SwingsStructured physical activity is planned and intentionally directed by an adult. Structured physical activity helps children’s muscles get stronger and gives them better stamina, flexibility, and heart health. It also helps them be a healthy weight.5

When children do structured physical activities, they burn more calories than when they do unstructured physical activities.

Structured physical activity:6

  • Is led by an adult and has a purpose
  • Is appropriate for children’s ages and development
  • Supports the development of children’s motor skills
  • Is fun
  • Involves all children
  • Doesn’t make children wait for a turn
  • Makes children breathe harder and faster for a short time
