One Step At a Time: Helping Young Children Be Active!

Physical Activity for Children with Disabilities

Boy in a SandboxChildren with disabilities should have a chance to be physically active. Being physically active helps children with disabilities improve their motor and cognitive skills.

Child care providers need to work with children and parents to see what is best for each child. Activities may need to be changed to create an appropriate activity for the child.

When planning activities, consider ways in which children may differ:

  • Children may differ in their ability to move.
  • Children may differ in how well they can see, hear, or speak.
  • Children may differ in how they take in and process information about the world around them.
