One Step At a Time: Helping Young Children Be Active!

Discipline

If young children misbehave, find other consequences for their behavior other than not letting them be physically active. For example, don’t make a child who misbehaves stay inside while other children go play outside. But children whose behavior is out of control may need a few minutes or longer to calm down before going back to playing.

Screen Time

Watching TV

Screen time is the time a person spends watching a television, a computer monitor, or a portable electronic device.

Screen time, even if it is educational, is not good for young children, especially children under age 2. Find other activities that are fun for children instead of screen time.

Children ages 2 and older may have up to 30 minutes per week of screen time that is educational or related to physical activity (like playing games or sports where the children are moving).2
